Route de la Grande Corniche

The Pope passed by... 200 years ago

You're in fine company

Pope Pius VII

The Grande Corniche has inspired film makers back to Hitchcock with To Catch a Thief starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly who became First Lady of Monaco, Princess Grace.

We enjoy trying to identify some of the locations, even if they are rather crudely projected on to a screen behind Grant and Kelly driving their car along the Grande Corniche. Tragically, Princess Grace died on the road somewhere along the road between the nearby village of La Turbie and Monaco.

More recently, Transporter starring Jason Statham was filmed partly around Eze... He stops at the local garage for fuel.

Eze - Jewel of the Med

La Bergerie is over 500 metros above the sea. Enjoy our terrace with breathtaking Mediterranean views ... with Eze village appearing like an island in a sea of blue. At night it's a glittering jewel, lit up by spotlights.

Even Pope Pius VII preferred this mountainous route to the surely easier coastal route way back in 1814, nearly 200 years ago. The Pope had his political differences with Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who sought, and perhaps insisted, on the Pope's endorsement as French ruler.

Pope Pius made his way back to Rome from Avignon, stopping at the nearby Auberge de la Croix du Pape, a former olive mill, which commemorates the visit with a stone cross inscribed in Latin.

Croix du Pape is our sister restaurant offering fine cuisine. We recommend you find it at
